Xanita Chair

Branding

Assembly

This completes the locking system.

To fill the gap between support and seat the lock folds
around.

The locking tab slots down through the seat and support and pushed through
untill it 'clicks'.

Assembly

The seat panel locks into the slot at the base of the chair.
The chair uses a combination of v-cuts and folding with the laminate removed.
The seat panel is folded around the chairs profile.
Once the support beam is in position a spacer is slotted over it.
This keeps the sides of the chair at 90 degrees.

The side panels are folded in and the triangular support beam is
slotted through the cut outs.

Final Chair

The idea behind this chair is that they would be placed around the exhibition with a provoking or thoughfull quote/statement printed on the backrest. The public is encouraged to write their own response on the chair itself. There will be 2 slots where markers are kept at the top of the backrest.

Flat Pattern

This is the flat pattern for my chair. It fits nicely in the size required. The details have been enlarged...

Locking Mechanism Refinements

Although this mock up is slightly smaller than the full size chair, it is extremely strong. It can hold the weight of 2 people so I have no doubt that the final chair will support the required 150kg!

Mock Up Model

1:1 Mock up. While making this model I came across a lack of support at the very back of the chair, this can be solved however, by cutting 2 flaps into the back face and folding them in, under the seat.
The handle sections will be extended to the backrest to clean up the lines of the chair. A spacer strip will be added during assembly, this is sandwiched between the support bar and the seat.

Locking Mechanism

The locking mechanism for the chair is a dovetail style joint. This also forms the handles for the chair. Although it does not look very sturdy, the strength and density of the Xanita board forms a very strong joint.

Concept Development

I have decided to take the best from 2 concepts and combine them to form my final design. It still needs refinement however-especially the locking mechanism...
